Nobody starts a retail business because they’re looking for some sort of recognition but when it happens it’s a pretty nice thing.

Make Designed Objects has just been awarded the title of gia Retailer of the Year for 2021 by GiftGuide Magazine in conjunction with the International Housewares Association in America.

Which means come March 2022 we’re off to Chicago as Australia’s representative in the global awards.

Back in 2003 just before Make opened for the first time I was busy taking deliveries and the door of the store was open.

An elderly lady put her head through the door and said “What’s all this then?”

I answered that I was opening a design store and that it was my intention to sell the best designed products from around the world.

She peered around the front of the shop, screwed up her face and said “Won’t last!” and then left, never to be seen again.
