Born in 1932 in Munich where he studied philosophy, anatomy, graphics and economy Richard Sapper started his working life in the Mercedes Benz design office and in 1958 moved to Milan where he worked first for Gio Ponti and Rinascente. He later joined the studio of Marco Zanuso with whom he designed many famed objects including Brionvega radios and televisions, the Grillo telephone and Kartell children’s seats. He has been living and working in Italy since the 50’s and has become an integral part of the history of Italian design. He has won the Compasso d’Oro ten times. His main interest is the design of technically complex objects, from ships to watches.
