Fujiwo Ishimoto (b.1941) is a Japanese textile and ceramic designer who has been living in Helsinki, Finland since 1970. After seeing Marimekko prints in Tokyo in the 60s, he resolved to travel to his new country. From 1970-1974 he worked for the company Decembre, set up by Ristomatti Ratia, son of Marimekko’s founders Armi and Viljo Ratia. He then began working for Marimekko in 1974. His work was inspired by traditional Asian art and culture as well as Finnish traditions and nature. In total, he has made over 300 designs for Marimekko. He has also created ceramic works in the Arabia Art Department since 1989.
