Aino Aalto (nee Marsio) (1894 – 1949) joined the studio of Alvar Aalto in 1924 and she and Aalto were soon married. In 1932 she won a design competition against a wide field including her more famous husband. That entry, the ‘Aino Aalto glasses’ also won the Gold Medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1936. The glasses are still produced today and remain one of Iittala’s most popular and enduring designs.
