I’m interested in good architecture.
Not old architecture.
Not new architecture.
Good architecture.
And I really hate it when good old architecture is destroyed by bad new architecture that attempts to mimic and “pay homage” to its environment.
Which is why I really like Coventry Cathedral (which does neither). I spent part of 1985 in Europe trudging (happily) around cathedrals with my family instead of going to school back in Australia.
Notre Dame, St. Paul’s, Strasbourg, Chatres…
Coventry’s the one that I remember most clearly.
The images above show what Coventry Cathedral looked like between about 1400 and the 13th of November 1940…
And then what it looked like after the German bombing on 14th of November 1940…
Followed by what it looked like after Sir Basil Spence’s addition and rebuilding post bombing.
What was once a good cathedral is now a great one.
Good architecture.
