Make Designed Objects began life in May 2003 when it opened the doors in Carlton in the inner north of Melbourne, Australia. Since then the business has grown rapidly to become one of Australia’s finest design stores.
To be selected by Make a product must be considered “good”. A Make product must perform well when considered for its design appeal – both aesthetically and theoretically, its environmental soundness, its durability, its necessity and in some cases its humour.
Provenance is unimportant when it comes to selecting a Make product. If the product list appears heavily weighted towards Scandinavian objects this simply reflects the fact that the region has an enormously strong design culture; Denmark and Finland in particular are a great source of our items.
We stock a good range of Australian products but will not stock any product simply based on its country of origin. We believe that for the Australian product design industry to develop to its full potential it is important that objects are “good” on a global level rather than “good” for Australia. Companies such as Fink & Co! from Canberra and individual designers such as Susan Cohn from Melbourne have made that step and their work is held in galleries and private collections worldwide.
However, whilst we don’t choose the products we sell based on provenance we do have an Australian designers section of the site where you can browse through much of the great work of local designers and makers. Due to the global nature of the design world some of these products aren’t actually produced in Australia (such as the pieces by Australian designers Susan Cohn and Steven Blaess for Alessi of Italy) but in each case the designer is an Australian.
